Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging (Mary walked through a forest of thorns)
One of a set of pieces were jointly commissioned by the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Baden State Theater) and the Kantorei und Chorschule an der Lutherkirche (Lutheran Choir School), Dr. Dorothea Lehmann-Horsch, director. They were premiered at the Staatstheater's Weihnachtssingen (Christmas Carol) concerts in 2014, performed by the Badische Staatskapelle with Danielle Squeo conducting
Maria durch ein Dornwald ging was first published in 1850, but likely had a long history before its initial publication. This complex tune and text presents a pregnant Mary walking through a dead forest of thorns. As she passes, the forest comes to life with blooming roses. This setting for unison treble voices and keyboard accompaniment features German text with an English singing translation.
An orchestral version (2.2.2.2 - 4.2.2.0 - pno, perc, str.) is also available. Contact Resonanz Music Publishing for details.
